Artistís Statement
My work results from an intuitive reaction to human and animal forms. These instinctive forms allow exploration into the balance of opposing forces in nature. The continuity of my work comes from my directness with materials and from the beliefs and emotions that have developed through personal experiences.

Born in Southern West Virginia, Richard Shrewsbury began expressing his artistic talents through drawing at an early age. Through his experiences growing up in rural Appalachia, the foundation was laid for the development of ideas and emotions that fuel his figurative work today. Richard discovered ceramics during his last year of school as a drawing major at Cleveland Institute of Art. He instinctively began hand-building figures with clay slabs. Enthusiastic about ceramics, Richard continued his education as a MFA candidate in ceramics at Arizona State University. It was there that Richards interest in Native American cultures merged with his knowledge of western mythology and religion. Since receiving his MFA in 1996 Richard has been exploring more in depth the technical elements of his work. Each piece is constructed from slabs of clay, cut to the appropriate size and general shape, similar to that of a tailorís pattern. The artist works almost entirely from the interior of the piece so as to leave undisturbed the natural fissures and surface textures that occur. Once the piece is completed, dry clays, slips and glazes are applied to the piece to change or enhance the color. Although the work expresses strong gesture and emotion they are meant as objects or fragments of a larger whole. For the past three years Richard has enjoyed giving demonstrations and lecturing as a visiting artist.
