1940 Born in Monroe, Washington

1958-60 Attends Everett Junior College, Everett, Washington

1958-62 Attends University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, receives B.A.

1962-64 Attends Yale University School of Art and Architecture, New Haven, Connecticut Receives B.F.A. in 1963, M.F.A. in 1964, both with highest honors

1964-65 Receives Fulbright Grant to study in Vienna, Austria

1973 Receives National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship

1991 Receives Skowhegan Medal for Painting

1992 Elected member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, New York

1996 Resident artist at The American Academy in Rome, Italy

1998 Elected Fellow of The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Cambridge, Massachusetts

2000 Awarded National Medal of Arts, Washington, D.C.

Awarded the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Magazine Photography from Life Magazin
